Destin and NW Florida Recreation

Northwest Florida is a great vacation destination for families.  The best thing to do here—chill.  You don't have to entertain the kids – even if they are programmed for it.  Just give them enough recreation—going to the beach or swim in one of the beautiful area pools.  There are plenty of kayaks, bikes and other fun things for young people.   Be aware that many of the beaches, post flags for rip currents, etc., which can be serious so pay attention!  The beach and water may look beautiful but the flags are there for a reason.

Eventually, everyone finds their favorite community.  The beaches of South Walton are a must to check out for those looking for the real authentic "beachy" life.  No chain restaurants here; instead authentic,  great food abounds, live music venues, lots of arts, unique shops, loads of ambiance and good vibe.

Kites are fun at the beach—plenty of places to fly them and lots of wind up there!  There are great places to explore . . . Jolee Island Nature Park is a nature park at the Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort if you happen to be staying "in town".

Lots of locals use the Sandestin facilities.  Just get a pass at the guard gate to go to "The Village". You can visit Jolee Island Nature Park and park a car there (along the way to the village),  If you are checking out the Sandestin area for a possible future stay and/or if you are spending money at the village (restaurants, shops, etc.) Lots of people meander around the resort that are visiting so they are accustomed to it.

Sandestin really doesn't care if you visit the nature park or nature trails for that matter.  Locals go and take their dogs for a run there.  The nature park (Jolee Island) is about five acres, very picturesque, filled with trails and surrounded by a salt marsh.  It is accessed by a foot bridge, has playground equipment in the shape of a pirate ship, grills, a small private beach on the bay, and a log cabin to explore.  Very fun for families.

Be aware if you have a small dog:  Typical of Florida regions, this area has coyotes, large birds of prey, etc., so keep a little Fido close.

Jolee Island is a great place to have a cookout, watch a sunset, have a family outing or picnic.   The Gordon Davidson Nature Trail is right across the street from Jolee Island—small but fun for small kids to play at the playground fort.

If you happened to get stopped by Sandestin Security (if your speeding, trying to spend the night there camping, acting unorderly or building a bonfire), just tell them you are on the way to the village and wanted to check out the resort.  There are some fun restuarants in "The Village" (Marina Cafe--fun for lunch at the marina).

Parents that need a night out—there are plenty of reputable sitting services in Destin.  Destin Kids Adventures is worth checking out.  We post their phone number and more about them in the "Special Services" section of the website.

Turkey Creek—a great free fun place on the Niceville side of the five mile bridge.  Not a dog friendly place but a fun spring fed river to float down (provide your own) and a really nice pavilion for a picnic. The creek has a sandy bottom, is rather cold but loads of fun for a free family outing day!

What to do at the beach?  First, wear sun screen (the spray stays on great for kids), chill, read, sunbathe, kayak, stand up paddle, swim, walk, build a sandcastle.  Play a classic game:

Volley Ball, Bocce Ball, Football, Water Relay, Beach Bowling are a few.

 BEACH LIFE

Its easy to get lost in the "beachy life" NW Florida offers.  But if by chance, you have been coming for quite some time or are the can't sit still type--you might be interested in exploring some great recreation close by:

FYI--Geologists from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection claim that the U.S. state of Florida may have the largest convergence of freshwater springs on the planet.

There are over 700 hydrological springs that naturally occur in places where water flows from the aquifer (underground) to the surface. There are springs located within 21 Florida State Parks.

CYPRESS SPRINGS about 1 hr away, (North in Vernon), Florida (Homes Creek in Washington County),  There are about 40 springs in Walton, Homes, Washington and Bay Counties.

LOCAL STATE PARKS

HENDERSON BEACH STATE PARK

is in Destin across from Walmart.  There is a small fee per car to enter this park. This Emerald Coast gem boasts 1.2 miles of private beach with picnic pavilions right in the heart of Destin.  There are really nice camping & RV facilities, immaculate bathrooms, shower and dressing areas, a playground and its famous mile long hiking trail.  If you want to get away from it all—it's worth the miniscule fee to get into the park and have lots of seclusion.   Dogs are allowed on a leash and strictly enforced:   not on the beach.

*Note-if you happen to be traveling with a pet you can take them out for a romp on most beaches before 7am.  Pay attention to beach flags for pets also.

Fred Gannon Rocky Bayou State Park

is located southeast of Niceville.  The entrance is on Hwy. 20.  850-833-9144.  The park is on the bay, about 7 miles from the beach.

Most locals refer to the park as "Rocky Bayou".   The park is fairly large with lots of diversity.  There are picnic and private beach spots on the water, you can fish--very good fishing.  Lots of Florida wildlife and birds of prey can be spotted.  Its very common to see the small Florida White-tailed deer meandering around.

The park opens at 8AM to sunset 24/7 and also charges a small fee per car. The park features:  really nice large pavillions with grills everywhere,  lots of hiking trails,  boat ramps, 40 some camp sites.

Once while visiting I observed a woman letting her large retrievers swim:  sure they love it but Florida does have alligators and other preditors: be aware.

All in all,   the park is very picturesque and well maintained with lots of nature and fun things to do.  You will also find, very inexpensive kayak and canoe rentals.

VORTEX SPRING

Take Interstate 10 to Exit 96 (Ponce de Leon), and go north 4.5 miles. The entrance to the spring is on the right.

Please do a little more research than I did if you plan to go.  I made the mistake of going on a weekend and the small area around the mouth of the spring was jam packed with festivests.  Lots of beer drinking going on and wall to wall people.   I just couldn't get past all the people in such a small space to really plug into the beauty of all there was there.  I've heard its amazing.  Don't know.

CRAB ISLAND

Inevitably, most visitors to the Destin area will  hear a reference about Crab Island.  So what and where is it?  There is a beautiful photo on the bottom of this page of the east pass area featuring the Destin bridge.  There is a picture of the sandbar known as "Crab Island" in the southern area of the photo below the Destin bridge.

Crab Island can often be seen full of boaters, floaters and festivests on the weekend.  It can get downright crowded with food vendors, adventurers, etc.   If you don't like crowds, don't go on the weekend in the summer!  Seriously, you can often have the whole place to yourself.  Just plan on a non-weekend day.

Often you can enjoy live music played from a floating stage.

Over the years Crab Island sunk and is now a good size sandbar; a thrill for the adventurous to walk across or snorkle around.  Very fun that you can get out of your water craft and roam or swim about!

The crystal clear water is usually about waist deep and is only accessable by a float or boat.

For the less adventurous, you can view Crab Islan from the Old Destin Deweys while enjoying one of their famous fish sandwhiches or baskets of fish.  An unchanged restaurant shanty on one of the most beautiful pieces of Destin real estate.  Beggar pelicans hang out on the roof watching intently for a fish  morsel dropping!  Not fancy but lots of ambiance and true Florida experience!
