DESTIN INSIDER SECRETS

The sunsets are so gorgeous that it’s a favorite past time to watch them here. There’s buzz about what restaurants have a front row seat on the beach and the top floor on most beach condos is a “sunset” view floor. It’s a big deal--there is even a beachside drive (known to visitors and locals alike) . . . to make during the evening--getting on it from the east and driving west. Lots of Harley people come to make the drive on their way to certain Harley hangouts. There are sunset walks, sunset cruises, sunset party boats, sunset weddings, sunset walkers, sunset joggers, sunset dogs running around, sunset everything’s. I guess it’s the way the sky has such a beautiful backdrop along the horizon of the ocean. It’s a time when everything is really buzzing--as the evening approaches. I wish I had some pictures of a very cool phenomena, I just recently had the opportunity to catch--this year. Of all the years I have lived in Florida, I have never seen "bioluminescent algae" until this year. The Bioluminescence an amazing natural phenomena that occurs when a type of planktonic algae (microscopic free-floating algae) has high densities of excess nutrients. The glow appears when the algae is disturbed by motion.

You can see it in the white caps of the waves that crash on the beach at a certain time of year. It’s so very cool like catching an Aurora Borealis or a shooting star. A real strange phenomena. Absolutely gorgeous and mesmerizing. It can be completely dark and you can see the neon lights lighting up the waves from the plankton all the way down the beach. Like someone is swimming with underwater lights on. Completely glowing. It only happens a very brief season--have to check--think its fall.
